Chapter Sixteen â Seekers of the Sword
âLetâs get going,â the Captain said breathlessly. âHuisdean, we need to go as fast as possible, we donât want Imperial long-ships up our backsides for the rest of the trip.â
âAye,â the navigator saluted and bounded to the helm.
âThat was a stupid thing to do,â Jareth scolded Armun while Bran and Melon struggled with ropes and Rob looked on in bemusement. The ship pulled away from the coast at a staggering pace as the wind caught and the tides receded, pulling them further from the coast.
On the fifteenth night out from Khamas, the wind had blown them inland; Armun and Jareth had seemed happy about this. The coast had belonged to the pengs and the Captain had suggested taking a look at the local town. Rob had been left on the ship with Melon, helping to make pea soup that had smelled foul, but they had abandoned the task when Armun and Jareth had returned at top speed, being pursued by Pengish soldiers.
With a strain and a creaking of the bows, the ship turned from the cove and shot into the open sea. Rob peered at the retreating Pengish ships and the city behind them, a shard of white in the green coastline. Spikes of marble towers scraped the sky with sharp, crystal spires while mansions with domed cupolas were embossed by crescents of sunlight that burst through green glass arches.
Rob turned his eyes to the Captain who was avoiding the glare his first mate was dealing him. Rob approached the mast but stopped as Jarethâs voice cracked like broken ice.
âYou could have gotten us all killed!â she hissed. âAnd for what? A gem?â
âItâs worth a whole lot.â Armun was defensive. âWe need to pay Taryn.â
âThe Draig-Spearâ¦â
âMight not be enough. You know what heâs like! Iâve dealt with the bloody oaf enough times to know he wonât stick to his original bargain.â
âYou said you could trust him!â
âI can trust him to be himself.â
âI donât like it.â Jareth sighed and leant against the railing. âThe Prince might have recognised me, for one. He visited the prison often enough. Razalâs beard, Armun, we were inside the Imperial catacombs!â
âI know,â there was a mischievous smirk in both of their eyes. âDid you see that scribeâs face when he realised what youâd done?â
âI didnât have time,â she jabbed his arm. âIn case you hadnât noticed I was already running for my life. Running for both our lives, I should say.â
âIâm glad you did, it wouldnât be the same otherwise. Good to get the blood pumping again, you have to admit. Like the old days.â
âThings have been too dull recently,â she agreed. âBut itâs not the same, Armun. Everything feels wrong. Iâve not dreamed of the Sword for three months. Iâve not even thought of the blue girl for so long and then, today, the pengs wereâ¦â
âIt doesnât matter what those feather-faces were saying.â He put an arm on her shoulder but she shrugged him off.
âYou canât recapture the past
